London - International mobile carrier Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) announced
that it plans to begin selling mobile song downloads free of digital rights
management (DRM) restrictions, and has licensed tracks from Universal Music,
Sony (NYSE: SNE) Music and EMI so far for the offering. The Vodafone Music Store will initially
offer over 1 million DRM-free tracks, which will be downloadable to a PC or
mobile phone, and also transferrable to portable devices like iPods --
"provided they belong to the customer." Reuters reported that
Vodafone is also in talks with Warner Music (NYSE: WMG) to join the DRM-free offering.
