Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Tuesday provided a sneak-peek at the upgrades coming this summer in the iPhone 3.0 software release, which will bring long-desired features like copy-and-paste of text, MMS multimedia messaging, and a search function that works across all applications. In addition to copy-and-paste and MMS, Apple will also introduce Spotlight for the iPhone, which will search through email, songs, text messages and other data on the device.

A bevy of other new features will also be added, such as turn-by-turn directions and Maps integration for third-party applications; "push" notifications for applications; support for CalDAV, which powers Google Calendar; a new Voice Memo application from Apple; landscape keyboard support in all applications; and stereo Bluetooth support.

Some of the new features, notably MMS, will not be available on the first generation iPhone model.

Apple said it sold a total of 30 million iPhones and iPod touch devices through 2008 -- including 13.7 million iPhones -- meaning that iPod touch sales through 2008 were roughly 16.3 million units.

The company also revealed that iPhone sales to date in the 80 countries in which it is now available now total 17 million.
