EMI Drops Suit Against Project Playlist, Licenses CatalogAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on March 25, 2009 - 10:42am.
London
- Major record label EMI has dropped its copyright infringement lawsuit against
Project Playlist, and instead licensed its full catalog to the site that lets
users create playlists from streaming songs served from across the Internet, TechCrunch
reported.
With EMI's dismissal, that leaves Warner Music and Universal Music Group with ongoing litigation against the company; Sony BMG had already licensed its catalog to the service. EMI, Warner and Universal filed suit against Project Playlist in April of last year, and the service was subsequently banned on Facebook and MySpace. Late last year, the company raised $20 million in financing, and named Facebook executive Owen Van Natta as its CEO. TechCrunch noted that U.S. visitors to the site dropped from 10.4 million in November 2008 to 6.1 million in February 2009, citing comScore data.
