Featured Artists Coalition Weighs in on Copyright Term Lengths

London - The Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), a lobbying group of U.K. musicians that includes Billy Bragg and members of Radiohead and Blur, has backed the U.K. government's official opposition to an EU-wide extension to copyright term lengths, Billboard reported.

"The Featured Artists Coalition commends the British government for recognizing that the proposed extension of copyright term in recorded music does not deliver real lasting benefits for artists or consumers," the group said in a statement.

The European Commission is currently evaluating a proposal that would extend copyright term lengths to 95 years.

"The FAC supports the principle of extending copyright beyond the current term. However, we believe that all rights in recordings should revert to the artist after 50 years.

"Owning our rights would enable artists to negotiate new deals with record labels and other users of music that would reflect the true costs of digital distribution. We would also be able to decide when our music can be used for free and when we should expect remuneration."

The group also urged artists in other EU member states to call for rights to revert to artists after 50 years.
