Emeryville, Calif. - SeeqPod, a service that lets users search for songs and stream them from sites across the Internet, as well as create custom playlists, has filed for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection in California, TechCrunch reported.

The company is currently facing copyright infringement litigation from several of the major labels; SeeqPod does not host any files itself, but the service does index both legal and unauthorized music streams.

The company, which said it is currently drawing 45 million visitors per month, who are conducting 120 million music searches, maintains that its service is protected under the "safe harbor" provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Even so, SeeqPod recently began offering the source code enabling its service for a $5,000 fee, in the hope that even if it is forced to shut down, the technology will live on.

TechCrunch noted that SeeqPod has to date raised $7 million in venture capital, from undisclosed investors.
