Report: Video Streaming Spikes on Newspaper WebsitesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on April 9, 2009 - 9:36am.
Cambridge,
Mass. - The total number of streaming
videos uploaded by newspaper websites grew by nearly 1500% in 2008, according
to a report from Brightcove, which powers video distribution for more than 30
major newspaper publishers.
The number of videos uploaded by newspapers grew by an average of 186 videos per month in 2007, to 638 videos per month in 2008. Brightcove also found that video streams are growing by an average of more than 35% quarter over quarter on newspaper sites, with the total video streams among newspaper customers up 365% in 2008. Nearly all of these videos have ads attached, with the 30-second pre-roll emerging as the dominant ad format. The study included data from 187 newspaper websites; Brightcove customers include Hearst, Tribune, New York Times Co., Washington Post and Media News Group. "We don't see online video as the salvation for the print industry or print newspapers, but we see it as a positive indicator," Josh Hawkins, director of corporate communications at Brightcove, told Wired.com. "Video can really be a catalyst for broader monetization opportunities."
