Paris - French president Nicolas Sarkozy's ruling UMP party will be reintroduce a controversial "three-strikes" anti-piracy bill after the legislation suffered an unexpected defeat in Parliament last week, Variety reports.

The bill would have required Internet service providers in the country to work with copyright holders, and disconnect the accounts of those repeatedly accused of engaging in illicit file-sharing.

It was defeated by a vote of 25-15 last week, due largely to votes from Socialist party members.

Variety cited experts as believing the bill will eventually be approved in France, despite the consensus in the larger European Union's legislative body that such termination of Internet access to be overkill.
