Arlington, Va. - PBS, the public broadcasting entity with 357 member stations, on Wednesday announced the beta launch of its new video portal, which will bring thousands of hours of national and local PBS programming to the Web, and ultimately include feature-length films and documentaries, as well as live events and performances.

The site features a special video player, with plans for original Web content also on the agenda.

Users can search and find shows by theme, episode, host and date, and watch full-length programs on demand.

The move comes seven moths after PBS launched a special online video site for kids, which now streams more than 1 million video clips a week.

In 2008, PBS.org outdrew all commercial broadcast network sites, according to Hitwise, ranking either first or second for 35 weeks, 11 more than NBC.
