Yahoo to Shutter GeoCities Free Web Page Hosting Service

San Francisco - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) plans to shutter its GeoCities free personal Web page hosting service later this year, and as of Thursday was no longer accepting new customers, Reuters reported.

The company said it would provide users with details on how to save data from their sites later this summer.

Yahoo acquired GeoCities in 1999, in a deal valued at the time to be worth around $4.6 billion.

At the time, the service hosted more than 3.5 million Web pages -- but such services became less popular with the advent of social networks and more user-friendly blogging platforms.

Funny how things change

Just yesterday I setup a new web page on Yahoo web hosting because my old Geocities site was aging. If you want to compare an old 1997 style site to a brand new 2009 site on the same topic, click the link: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/6879/index.html

The replacement they offer is worthless

The replacement they are offering is totally unacceptable for people on fixed incomes. It requires a lump sum payment for an entire year of service. Their ads on the free pages were worthless because the service advertised is useless.

Not a big mess

i tried to login and got the following : Sorry, new GeoCities accounts are no longer available. Not a big mess.. Geocities had a good intention, but poor implementation.

Sounds very interesting and

Sounds very interesting and useful, especially the user manuals. I will also be looking forward to the proposed one on Ubercart, having just completed a site. :-)

Geocities Free Shutting Down

Too bad for me. You have a few weeks left to see what will soon be lost to public view. Most of my pages are linked to this front free Yahoo page.
