San Francisco - Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) plans to shutter its GeoCities free personal Web page hosting service later this year, and as of Thursday was no longer accepting new customers, Reuters reported.
The company said it would provide users with details on how to save data from their sites later this summer.
Yahoo acquired GeoCities in 1999, in a deal valued at the time to be worth around $4.6 billion.
At the time, the service hosted more than 3.5 million Web pages — but such services became less popular with the advent of social networks and more user-friendly blogging platforms.

It’s certainly not surprising that GeoCities is shutting down, as Yahoo has been in cost-cutting mode for months and the service would seem to have little fit in its current business.

The replacement they are offering is totally unacceptable for people on fixed incomes. It requires a lump sum payment for an entire year of service.
But i think free hosting is not for good sites!
GeoCities is a good service that yahoo provided .. but Geocities had a good intention, but poor implementation.

We can NEVER depend on a single electronic feature….that can also be called a single point of failure. I have been in a big fight with the company doing our web hosting. (Both the old one and the one that bought the old company..The web page has been migrated to a new system. I thought we might loose our email accounts.

This is a new & praising new thing started by yahoo. This is really nice. Thanks a lot.
Sad news. We were getting free hosting.
Too bad for me. You have a few weeks left to see what will soon be lost to public view. Most of my pages are linked to this front free Yahoo page.
I didn’t even know geocities was still around or even yahooo took over. That is very interesting.
Free Web Page Hosting is very common and lots of companies offer different kind of services.GeoCities Here, you could find GeoCities instructions and tips for the beginner or emerging GeoCities technology for the advanced user.Yahoo web hosting is exposing the features and benefits of Yahoo products.

Their ads on the free pages were worthless because the service advertised is useless.
This is really really a very bad news. I have few websites on geocities. The first website in my life was also published on geocities.
i tried to login and got the following :
Sorry, new GeoCities accounts are no longer available.
Not a big mess.. Geocities had a good intention, but poor implementation.
