San Francisco - While consumer confidence in the overall economy dipped in April, confidence in technology and consumer electronics climbed sharply, according to new figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and CNET.

The organizations said that their CEA-CNET Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE) rose to 77.4, up more than 10 points from March to reach its highest level since December.

The index also is up on a year-over-year basis for the first time since September.

"The ICTE showed that consumers are more likely this month to buy consumer electronics and spend more on those products than last month," said Anne Claudio, the vice president of research at CBS Interactive, the parent of CNET.

The CEA and CNET have been tracking index data since Jan. 2007.
