Silver Spring,
Md. - Discovery Communications (NASD: DISCA),
the owner of more than 100 cable TV networks, including the Discovery Channel,
TLC and Animal Planet, said on Thursday that it has formed a joint venture with
toymaker Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) for a new TV network and website devoted to children's
entertainment.
The network, to be half owned by each company, will take the place of Discovery's current Discovery Kids network, and feature content from Hasbro's large stable of entertainment and educational properties, including Romper Room, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and G.I. Joe. Hasbro will pay $300 million for its stake in the network, which will continue to operate as Discovery Kids until the debut of the to-be-named channel in late 2010.
