Report: Amazon to Debut Larger Kindle E-book Reader

New York - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) is expected to introduce a larger version of its Kindle e-book reader device this week, which will be "tailored for displaying newspapers, magazines and perhaps textbooks," The New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the plans. Since that article was published, Amazon has announced it will host a press conference in New York on Wednesday.

The Times article noted that the paper itself is expected to be involved in the introduction of the device.

The current Kindle 2 model, released just three months ago, sports a six-inch, black-and-white screen, and while it offers subscriptions to a number of periodicals, was designed with reading books in mind.

"I don't think we would be anywhere near as excited about anything in black and white as we would about high-definition color," Tom Wallace, the editorial director of Condé Nast, told The Times.

"But technology changes at a pretty high clip these days, and if we are now in the Farmer Gray days, it will be only a very short while until we are in the video game era."
