Redmond, Wash. - After announcing in January that it would lay off 5,000 employees over an 18-month period -- at which time it cut 1,400 positions -- Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) on Tuesday laid off another more than 3,000 staffers. In an email sent to employees that was published by CNET News.com, CEO Steve Ballmer said the cuts were being made "in response to the global economic downturn," adding that the company "will continue to closely monitor the impact of the economic downturn on the company and if necessary, take further actions on our cost structure including additional job eliminations."

Ballmer said today's layoffs include positions across the company, both in the U.S. and other countries.
