Amazon Unveils $489 Kindle DX With Larger Screen

Seattle - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) on Wednesday introduced a new version of its Kindle e-book reader device, the $489 Kindle DX, which sports a larger 9.7-inch screen designed with newspapers, magazines and textbooks in mind. A number of newspapers, including The New York Times, Boston Globe and Washington Post, will offer the DX at a reduced price to readers who live in areas where home delivery is not available, and who sign up for long-terms subscriptions to the Kindle edition of their papers.

Amazon said the DX has 2.5 times the surface area of its existing Kindle 2 model's 6-inch display.

The DX has 3.3 GB of on-board memory capable of storing up to 3,500 books; users can purchase and download more than 275,000 e-book titles from Amazon wirelessly using the device.

The company also said that textbook publishers representing over 60% of the U.S. market will begin offering textbooks through the Kindle Store this summer.

A handful of schools -- including Arizona State University, Case Western Reserve University, Princeton University, Reed College, and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia -- will launch trial programs to make the Kindle DX available to students in the fall.

"The Kindle DX holds enormous potential to influence the way students learn," said Barbara R. Snyder, president of Case Western Reserve University.

"We look forward to seeing how the device affects the participation of both students and faculty in the educational experience."

Great for Students, Don't Know About Newspapers

That’s awesome that a larger-display version is coming out. It is kind of odd that it costs as much as a laptop. If Amazon’s Kindle can properly take care of tables, graphics, annotations, that would make this a very powerful tool for textbooks. The impact on traditional newspaper is less clear, unless Kindle can have a very low price point. I don’t have a Kindle but checked one out from a friend. The screen is very neat and unlike most standard back-lit LCDs. If you get a chance, check it out. Kindle’s display is VERY cool and more comfortable for all-day reading. In any case, it is awesome that there is another, larger screen, Kindle coming out. It is pretty exciting that Amazon is putting a ton of effort into revolutionizing and popularizing eBooks. On the note about Amazon, thanks to PC World, I just recently came across an interesting table that shows Amazon’s discounts in various categories. It is at http://www.uberi.com Maybe someone will find it useful too, or at least somewhat amusing…
