Rep. Frank Introduces Bills to Overturn Web Gambling Ban

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on May 6, 2009 - 11:18am.
Washington - U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, on Wednesday introduced legislation to overturn the three-year-old ban on Internet gambling. "The government should not interfere with people's liberty unless there is a good reason," said Frank. "This is, I believe, the single biggest example of an intrusion into the principle that people should be free to do things on the Internet. It's clearly the case that gambling is an activity that can be done offline but not online."

Frank said at a press conference that he intends to push the legislation through his own committee before the August break, but said he hadn't spoken with leadership in the House, Senate or White House about the bills, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Co-sponsors of the legislation include Reps. Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.).

The legislation would repeal the ban put in place in 2006 by the Bush administration, and instead regulate the industry by requiring that companies providing online gambling services in the U.S. to apply for licenses.

The firms would first have to agree to a background check on their financial status, structure and experience.

Under the proposed legislation, online sports gambling would still be prohibited.

Internet Gambling

I'm not sure where I stand on this issue. On the one hand, gambling is an addictive hobby where most people inevitably come out with a loss. Every game, as far as payout is concerned, it designed so that in the end money is consistently taken from the player and put into the pockets of the already rich. If you consider that with internet gambling most people use their credit cards, then you can see clearly how this activity will do little more than to continue to squeeze the pursestrings of the average american. In a bad economy as we have no, the last thing we as a people need is more debt, and consequently, more power in the hands of corrupt credit card companies. Yet, one cannot argue that we, as a free people, have the right to do whatever we want, so long as it does not harm or interfere with others. So, the question thusly is this: Would internet gambling overall help or hurt the bigger financial situation in this country. Will it help feed the economy, or merely channel potentially useful revenue into a dead end? I'm all for freedom. But we seem to be heading toward a phase in history when financial irresponsibility is less of a right and more of a burden.

I agree that it is set up for the player to lose. But I would also say that the stock market is a gamble and I know that most people would not want us to quite gambling on the stock market. Starting a new bussness is a gamble also but that is what this great country is based on. People gambling and succecding. Usually this country rewards a great gamble with great payoff. Why we cannot play cards online is a joke. Thanks for nothing I do not need anyone holding my hand saying it is for my own good I do not play cards online cause i may lose more money than i put in. It is like we should all wear seat belts it is a law now in most states if not all. That law says it is for our safety but bull crap we all know it is for the insurance companys. It is nice to pay insurance and never ever ever have to pay anyone back for there investment. True that is no gamble at all. Well maybe this is a move to keep people going to the places like Vegas or gambling boats or atlantic City. As if the online gambling is taking away from there profit at all. Sounds like the mob not wanting anyone moving in on there turf making money. And the goverment is protecting it. So thank you very much i can decide if i would like to play a online game for 2 dollars a game. Thank you sir for helping us try to get back some of our personal rights. "The most important rights in this great country." The american honest people can take only so many hits before we explode so leave us alone for gods sake before we get really mad and don't hold my hand anymore.
