Rep. Frank Introduces Bills to Overturn Web Gambling BanAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on May 6, 2009 - 11:18am.
Washington
- U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Chairman of the House Financial Services
Committee, on Wednesday introduced legislation to overturn the three-year-old ban
on Internet gambling. "The government should not interfere with people's
liberty unless there is a good reason," said Frank. "This is, I
believe, the single biggest example of an intrusion into the principle that
people should be free to do things on the Internet. It's clearly the case that
gambling is an activity that can be done offline but not online."Frank said at a press conference that he intends to push the legislation through his own committee before the August break, but said he hadn't spoken with leadership in the House, Senate or White House about the bills, The Wall Street Journal reported. Co-sponsors of the legislation include Reps. Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.). The legislation would repeal the ban put in place in 2006 by the Bush administration, and instead regulate the industry by requiring that companies providing online gambling services in the U.S. to apply for licenses. The firms would first have to agree to a background check on their financial status, structure and experience. Under the proposed legislation, online sports gambling would still be prohibited.
