Baltimore Sun Byline Strike Protests Job CutsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on May 7, 2009 - 8:23am.
Baltimore - More than 50 Baltimore Sun reporters, photographers and
other content producers on Thursday carried out a one-day byline strike to
protest recent layoffs at the newspaper, according to the Washington-Baltimore
Newspaper Guild.
The move comes a week after The Sun abruptly cut 61 newsroom jobs -- about one-third of its total newsroom staff -- reducing the staff to 148 employees, down from 420 when Chicago-based Tribune acquired the paper in 1999. "These decisions were made without any discussions on alternative costs saving methods," said Brent Jones, a Sun editor and guild representative. "We wanted to do something to show our former co-workers that we're upset with how they were treated last week. We produce this paper and expect our voices to be heard."
