Report: Blu-ray Player Sales Up 72% in First QuarterAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on May 8, 2009 - 10:17am.
Port Washington, N.Y. - Sales of Blu-ray players were up 72%
in the first quarter, to more than 400,000 units, indicating more mainstream
adoption of the new format, according to a report from market research firm NPD
Group.
Dollar sales were also up 14%, to $107.2 million, and the average price of a standalone Blu-ray player fell nearly 34%, from $393 last year to $261 in the first quarter of 2009. "The rising penetration of high-definition televisions and lower Blu-ray player prices are broadening the format's market opportunity," said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD. "Even as options expand for accessing movies digitally, Blu-ray is carrying forward the widespread appeal of DVD into the high-definition marketplace." NPD also found that overall consumer awareness of Blu-ray in the U.S. has reached 90% in the past six months, although 58% report they are still "not very familiar" with Blu-ray.
