Washington - National Geographic said on Thursday that it has partnered with California-based Cellular Abroad to launch a new subscription-free cell phone service that allows U.S. residents to make and receive international calls.

The new service builds on the companies' Talk Abroad plan, which is geared toward those traveling overseas.

Direct-dial calls from the U.S. to many international markets, including Mexico, Canada, China and the U.K., will start at $0.17 a minute.

Users also need to pay for one of two cell phones from Motorola, priced at $69 and $199.

John Dumbacher, National Geographic's senior vice president of licensing, called the new service "perfect for people who need dependable wireless service but don't want to pay for minutes they won't use."
