Washington - The Obama administration plans to name Google executive Andrew McLaughlin to become the nation's Deputy CTO, The New York Times reported, citing two people with knowledge of the situation.

McLaughlin, Google's (NASD: GOOG) head of global public policy and senior counsel, would report to Aneesh Chopra, who last month was named the nation's first CTO.

Chopra previously served as the Secretary of Technology in Virginia.

The appointment would be the third in the Obama administration for a former Google executive, following the naming of Katie Stanton as director of citizen participation and Sonal Shah as head of the White House Office of Social Innovation.

Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, has been a close advisor to the administration on technology issues.
