Obama Urges U.S. to Prepare for Digital TV Switch Next WeekAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on June 5, 2009 - 10:09am.
Washington
- President Barack Obama this week urged Americans to prepare themselves for
the transition to all-digital television broadcasting that is set to happen
next week on June 12.
The switchover was initially supposed to happen in February, but Obama worked with Congress to postpone the deadline "because it was clear that millions of Americans would have been left in the dark if the conversion had gone on as planned," Obama said in a statement. The number of unprepared households has been cut from 6 million to 3 million in that time, according to Nielsen data. "Still, some people are not ready," Obama continued. "I want to be clear: there will not be another delay. I urge everyone who is not yet prepared to act today, so you don't lose important news and emergency information on June 12."
