Report: 'Net-Connected Game Consoles Lead Web-to-TV AccessAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on June 15, 2009 - 10:20am.
Scottsdale, Ariz.
- Broadband-connected video game consoles will remain the top device for
streaming Web video to U.S. television sets through 2013, when over 10.7
million consoles will be used to access such services, according to a report
from market research firm In-Stat.
Currently, 29% of U.S. adults ages 25-34 with game consoles use the devices to watch streaming Internet video. Within five years, the number of U.S. broadband households viewing Web content on their televisions will grow to 24 million. "Currently Web video is largely additive to traditional TV revenue streams," said In-Stat analyst Keith Nissen. "However, ultimately web video to the TV will force a complete restructuring of today's video distribution ecosystem." By 2013, In-Stat predicts, revenue from Web-to-TV streaming services will reach $2.9 billion.
