Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Wednesday released its 3.0 software update for the iPhone, bringing long-desired features like copy-and-paste, push notifications, multimedia messaging and tethering of 3G connections. U.S. carrier AT&T plans to introduce MMS for the iPhone this summer, and not all carriers will allow tethering of the iPhone to a laptop for sharing of the 3G Internet connection.

Other features added in 3.0 include a landscape keyboard in some applications, including Mail, along with support for stereo Bluetooth and a feature called Find My Phone, available to MobileMe subscribers.

The software update is free for iPhone owners, and will cost $9.95 for iPod touch owners.

Apple plans to begin selling its new iPhone 3G S on Friday.
