AT&T Loosens Pricing Policy on iPhone 3G S Upgrades

San Antonio, Texas - Acknowledging customer outcry, AT&T (NYSE: T) has loosened the restrictions placed on the discount that current Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhone 3G owners can exercise when purchasing the new iPhone 3G S.

Many customers who purchased the iPhone 3G, released just 11 months ago, would not have been eligible for the $199 16GB/$299 32 GB iPhone 3G pricing offered to new customers or owners of the first-generation iPhone, and instead would pay $399/$499.

The company said that it generally gives iPhone customers who spend more than $99 per month the option to upgrade to a newer device between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

"We've been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we're extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time," the company said.

Customers who own an iPhone 3G who would have been eligible for upgrade pricing in July, August or September will now be able to upgrade at the lower price points.
