France's Sarkozy Reaffirms Commitment to 'Three-Strikes' Policy

Paris - During the first presidential address to France's Parliament in 150 years, Nicolas Sarkozy expressed frustration at the country's highest court's decision to disallow the disconnection of repeat file-swappers' accounts, and said he intends to "go all the way" in regard to a "three-strikes" policy, TorrentFreak reported.

The French Parliament passed a law that would have enabled an independent body to compel ISPs to disconnect file-swappers after a second warning, but earlier this month the Constitutional Council said that a court order must be issued for such actions.

"How can one simultaneously claim that the economy is regulated but the Internet is not so? How can we accept that the rules that apply to society as a whole are not binding on the Internet?" Sarkozy said, according to TorrentFreak.

"By defending copyright I do not just defend artistic creation, I also defend my idea of a free society where everyone's freedom is based on respect for the rights of others. I am also defending the future of our culture. It is the future of creation," Sarkozy added.
