Streaming Service Imeem to Launch Own Digital Song Store

San Francisco - Streaming music service imeem is quietly testing its own digital music download store, TechCrunch reported, with the company saying that it will continue to offer the existing links to purchase songs heard on its service from Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store and Amazon MP3 (NASD: AMZN) when its own store launches.

The feature is currently being tested on sales of songs and full albums from some Sub Pop artists, with payment options including credit card and PayPal.

TechCrunch calculated that by operating its own store, imeem stands to triple its revenue from song sales, from the 5% it gets from affiliate sales through iTunes or Amazon.

The company last week said it would discontinue some of its social network features, such as photo and video uploads, and concentrate on its music service.

Imeem is heading towards failure

How in the world does Imeem expect to beat iTunes or Amazon (or even Walmart) for music downloads? There is no benefit to the potential users. The recent deletion of user-generated photos and videos did nothing, but anger the loyal paying and non-paying members who spent time making Imeem the search engine success story it is. Mix that member anger with the multi-million dollar write off by Warner of its investment in Imeem and the Imeem layoffs in the past 12 months, it is clear that the company is searching for anything it can to stay out of bankruptcy. It just doesn't make sense to try and do so by competing against iTunes or Amazon that have built-in market share due to existing product lines. The Imeem spin doctors will tell you all is healthy, but look for Imeem to join the growing list of failed music social network sites because it is dumping the word "social" for "sales". - Disappointed Imeem VIP member

Really Imeem, are you that desperate?

This sounds like a desperate attempt by a failing platform. Imeem killed itself when it obviously started promoting the same hip-hop/pop artist that we're all already saturated with in the USA. It was impossible to discover anything new if the same stuff that Clear Channel is already spreading gets shoved down your throat yet again. The platform exploded fast, but eventually turned out to be rather empty. I much prefer Last.fm, who has done a reasonable job to maintain it's identity and stay relevant while growing to a more mass audience. If a platform is going to succeed, it needs to invest in promoting music that has the depth to keep listeners coming back. But I suppose that's something the industry as a whole needs to realize.

Imeem is on its way out. It

Imeem is on its way out. It was relevent because it was a social network and not a site to buy music like Amazon or Itunes. Terrible business decision to delete content the paying VIP members like myself spent our TIME and FAITH in Imeem creating, uploading, tagging, and sharing. You can reimburse my VIP fee, but not my 2 years spent sharing pictures and videos with family and friends that has just been WIPED out by Imeem. Hate u Imeem and the fraud you enacted on us paying customers.
