Roll Call to Buy Rival Congressional QuarterlyAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 21, 2009 - 9:15am.
Washington - More than a month after reports first surfaced
about the deal, Roll Call Group on Tuesday confirmed that it will acquire
fellow Washington-based political media firm Congressional Quarterly (CQ) from
owner Times Publishing Co.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Economist Group, the U.K.-based parent of Roll Call, said that it plans to form a new company to be known as the CQ-Roll Call Group, led by managing director Laurie Battaglia. "The new CQ-Roll Call Group will have the largest and most experienced newsroom covering Washington," said Battaglia. The new company plans to continue publishing both papers, with the "great majority" of CQ's staff joining the combined entity. Robert Merry, the president and editor-in-chief of CQ for the past 12 years, will not be retained.
