Amazon CEO Bezos Apologizes Over Deleted Kindle E-booksAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 24, 2009 - 4:52am.
Seattle
- After a snafu prompted Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) last week to remotely delete a number of improperly
licensed e-books from customers' Kindle e-book reader devices, CEO Jeff Bezos
issued an apology for the controversy. "Our 'solution' to the problem was
stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles," Bezos
wrote on the Amazon Kindle Community forum."It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we've received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission." The company deleted the purchased e-books from its customers' Kindles after discovering that the titles, including George Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm," had not been properly licensed for sale by a third party vendor.
