Apple Reviewing Spotify Music Streaming iPhone Application

San Francisco - Spotify, a European ad-supported streaming music service, is set to launch in the U.S. and has submitted an iPhone application for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) approval, according to Wired.com, which posted a review of the service.

"It's going to be very interesting to see if Apple lets this through or sees us as competition -- fingers crossed," Spotify communications manager Jim Butcher told Wired.com.

Spotify offers on-demand access to over 6 million songs for free with attached ads, as well as paid versions free of advertising. Users can also create and share playlists.

The iPhone application will require that users be paying subscribers to Spotify's Web-based service; U.S. pricing has yet to be determined.

Unlike most mobile radio services, Spotify will be able to cache songs in a playlist to the iPhone, so they may be played even when Wi-Fi or 3G is not in range, or even in "airplane" mode.
