U.K. VOD Venture Project Kangaroo's Assets Sold to ArqivaAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 27, 2009 - 7:13am.
London - Project Kangaroo,
the online video-on-demand joint venture set up by U.K. broadcasters BBC Worldwide,
ITV and Channel 4, has been sold for an undisclosed sum to Arqiva.
The project was killed by the U.K.'s Competition Commission earlier this year, which said the service would yield too much power over pricing in the market. Winchester, England-based Arqiva is the owner and operator of the U.K.'s terrestrial TV infrastructure, and holds two of the six digital terrestrial TV multiplexes. Arqiva plans to use the Project Kangaroo platform to launch a new video-on-demand service to U.K. consumers in the coming months. The company said the platform "will aim to host top-end quality content from leading broadcasters and independent content providers," including both free-to-air and pay-TV content.
