Report: GPS Smartphone Shipments Climb 34% to 77 MillionAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on July 29, 2009 - 9:24am.
Boston
- Worldwide shipments of smartphones equipped with GPS will grow 34% this year,
from 57 million in 2008 to 77 million in 2009, according to a report from
market research firm Strategy Analytics.
The jump in adoption is being fueled by consumer acceptance of vehicle-based devices like TomTom and Garmin in Europe and the U.S., and the increasing presence of mapping applications from firms like Nokia, Apple and BlackBerry. "GPS smartphones, such as the Nokia N97 and Apple iPhone, are a high-growth segment that continues to expand even during the current, tough economic times," said Strategy Analytics' Joanne Blight.
