Report: Set-top Box Shipments to Pass 200 Million by 2013Authored by Mark Hefflinger on July 31, 2009 - 4:32am.
Dallas
- Annual worldwide TV set-top box shipments are expected to exceed 200 million
by 2013, boosted by service providers exchanging older models for new devices
with advanced features, according to a report from market research firm Parks
Associates.
The global transition to digital TV broadcasting, and nascent services like IPTV will increase competition among providers to offer more advanced features on their set-tops, like digital video recording, and place-shifting. "Consumers are attracted to the concept of connected CE, with one-third of U.S. broadband households very interested in a set-top box that connects to their PC and Internet service as well as their TV," said Parks Associates research analyst Jayant Dasari. "While less than ten percent are willing to pay a monthly fee, demand is still on an upward trend, especially as the set-top connects to more and more services."
