Report: U.S. Online TV, Movie Watching Up DramaticallyAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 5, 2009 - 9:19am.
New York
- Online Americans are watching more full-length movies and TV shows online, as
26% report having streamed a TV show and 14% a feature-length film in the past
30 days, according to a report from market research firm Ipsos MediaCT.
The numbers are more than two times the levels measured in September 2008. Among 18-24 year-olds, the percentages are even higher, with 51% saying they have streamed a TV show, while 30% streamed a movie in the past month. Ipsos attributed the growth to websites like Hulu, and other ad-supported streaming sites. "The digital video revolution is no longer centered on short clips via YouTube; it is becoming an important distribution channel where any type of full-length video can be instantly accessed for immediate consumption without a fee," said Ipsos senior research manager Brian Pickens. Television is still the dominant format, with Americans with Internet access watching 15 hours per week on their sets, compared to less than two on their computers. Furthermore, 64% of Web video watchers said they would rather watch hour-long dramas and half-hour comedies live on their TV than rent or purchase them, or watch them on a computer or portable device.
