Survey: Teens Not Taking to TwitterAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 5, 2009 - 10:00am.
New York
- While Twitter is now used by 10.7% of all active U.S. Internet users,
teenagers are not a substantial portion, as only 16% of Twitter.com visitors
were under the age of 25, according to a survey conducted by Nielsen
NetRatings.
This, despite the fact that persons under 25 make up nearly one-quarter of all U.S. Internet users. Nielsen's NetRatings panel consists of 250,000 U.S. Internet users, and only counted visits to Twitter.com; the service is also accessed by many via third-party and mobile services like Tweetdeck. Nielsen also measured Tweetdeck's audience, and found that more than 90% is over the age of 25. Despite the seeming lack of interest among teens, the company is still generating tremendous buzz, as "the volume of Twitter mentions on blogs, message boards and forums has reached the same level as Facebook, a property four times its size," Nielsen noted.
