Fox Puts 30-Day Window on Redbox DVD Rental KiosksAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 6, 2009 - 8:15am.
New York
- News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) 20th Century Fox is putting restrictions on the placement of its
movies in DVD rental kiosks operated by Coinstar's (NASD: CSTR) Redbox unit, in a bid to gain
a greater share of rental revenues, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Fox has asked distributors not to provide its DVDs to Redbox's $1-per-night rental machines for 30 days after their DVD release. The Journal cited a source who said Fox also offered DVDs on their official release dates, provided that Redbox increase its share of rental revenues -- an offer Redbox rejected. Fellow major studio Universal also demanded a 45-day waiting period for DVD distribution via Redbox. Redbox has refused to comply, and instead sued Universal, in a federal court case that is still pending.
