Top Kids' Search Terms: YouTube, Sex, Porn, FredAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 11, 2009 - 10:54am.
San Francisco
- "Sex" and "Porn" are among the top ten search terms kids
are entering into search engines, based monitoring of their usage of
Internet-connected computers by Symantec's OnlineFamily.Norton service, CNET
News.com reported.
"I think seeing how dominant the terms 'sex' and 'porn' are, that they come up well within the top 10, doesn't surprise us," Marian Merritt, Symantec's Internet safety advocate, told CNET. "You go down farther in the list, you see words of anatomy like 'boobs,' it almost makes you laugh because we remember what it was like to be a preteen or teen. Parents don't often have context around this sort of thing." The service, which is geared toward kids ages 8-13, tracked 3.5 million searches between February and July. The top search term was YouTube; also placing in the top ten were Google; Facebook; MySpace; Yahoo; Michael Jackson; eBay; and Fred -- a YouTube personality.
