Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. video game sales were down 29% in July -- their fifth consecutive month of decline -- to $848.9 million, and are down 14% overall from the same period last year, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. Hardware sales fell 37% from a year ago; Nintendo's Wii led all consoles with sales of 252,500 units, while the Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) Xbox 360 sold 202,900 units and Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 sold 121,800 units.

The Nintendo DS led all hardware sales with 538,900 units.

"Hardware sales have slowed considerably on nearly every platform," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

"The Xbox 360 is the only console system showing a unit sales increase year-to-date, while the NDS has the highest sales of all hardware platforms both for the month, and year-to-date."

As overall game sales dropped 26% from a year ago, the top-selling game during July was Electronic Arts' (NASD: ERTS) "NCAA Football 10," with combined sales of 689,000 units across all platforms.

Nintendo also claimed six of the remaining top ten slots in game sales.

While game sales are poised to rebound in the coming months with the release of anticipated titles, including "Halo 3," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" and "The Beatles: Rock Band," NPD's Frazier noted that "of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year.
