Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment (NYSE: SNE) has announced plans to introduce a cheaper, slimmer version of its PlayStation 3, which will sell for $299 when it goes on sale Sept. 1. At $299, the PS3 "Slim" is still more expensive than Microsoft's Xbox 360 or Nintendo's Wii.

The company also said it will drop the price on its 80GB PlayStation 3 to $299, while its 160GB model will be discounted to $399.

The initial PlayStation 3, which featured a 20GB hard drive, sold for $499 when it went on sale in 2006.

To date, the PlayStation 3 has sold over 23.7 million units, fewer than the Microsoft Xbox (30 million) or Nintendo Wii (52 million).
