Ustream Sued Over Unauthorized Boxing Match Video FeedsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 18, 2009 - 9:25am.
Palo Alto,
Calif. - Ustream, a provider of
live video webcasting services, has been sued by a boxing promoter over unauthorized
streams of a Roy Jones Jr. fight that were allegedly viewed by over 2,300
Ustream users, TechCrunch reported.
In its lawsuit, Square Ring, Inc. states that Ustream ignored its proactive requests to address potential stream piracy in the week leading up to the bout, including asking for a "take down tool," and staff to monitor the site for unauthorized streams. For its part, Mountain View, Calif.-based Ustream denied any wrongdoing. "Ustream is serious about complying with the copyright laws and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and we're aggressively taking short- and long-term steps to work with the content industry to meet their needs," the company told TechCrunch. "We believe the Square Ring lawsuit does not have merit and that we're fully protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act Safe Harbor provisions."
