French National Library Joins Google Book Project

London - The National Library of France (Bibliotheque Nationale de France) has agreed to join Google's (NASD: GOOG) massive book-scanning project, following a four-year dispute over whether it should instead contribute to a virtual library special to the European Union, the Times Online reported.

"We will not stop our own digitizing program, but if Google can enable us to go faster and farther, then why not?" Denis Bruckmann, director of collections at the library, told the Times Online.

Some 29 other institutional libraries have joined Google's project, including the Bodelian Library at Oxford in Britain, and numerous libraries of American universities.

French National Library Joins Google Book Project
