/ August 25, 2009 2:51 pm

Washington – At their current rate of improvement, average download Internet speeds in the U.S. will take 15 years to catch up to those in South Korea, the country with the fastest average Internet connections, according to new research by the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

Based on data from more than 413,000 online testers, average speeds in the U.S. increased from 3.5 megabits per second (mbps) in 2007 to 5.1 mbps in 2009.

The test, available at the top link below, shows that only 20% of participants had Internet speeds in the range of the top ranked countries, including South Korea, Japan and Sweden.

Internet users in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic tended to have the highest speeds, while those in the South and West had the lowest.
