System-Wide Outage Strikes Google Gmail, Affects MillionsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on September 1, 2009 - 10:48am.
Mountain View,
Calif. - Gmail, the Web-based
email service of Google (NASD: GOOG), experienced a system-wide outage on Tuesday, leaving
millions of users unable to access their accounts.
The service, used by nearly 150 million users a month, began experiencing problems early Tuesday morning, and still remained down by mid-afternoon, with users receiving the message, "Server Error. The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds." Google acknowledged the issue in several status messages throughout the day, but could not offer a specific time for a resolution. Google's other services appeared unaffected. Update: The service now appears to be back online.
