Dallas - AT&T (NYSE: T) on Wednesday announced plans to double the speed of its 3G wireless network in six major cities this year, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Charlotte. The company plans to deploy the speed-boosting HSPA 7.2 technology in 25 of the top 30 U.S. markets by the end of 2010, and across 90% of its existing 3G network footprint by the end of 2011.

The upgraded network platform allows for theoretical peak speeds of 7.2 Mbps; actual speed depends on factors including location, device and network traffic.

Currently, only the Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhone 3GS can take advantage of AT&T's speed boost, but the company expects to add another five smartphones to the lineup by year's end.

Am I the only one who would prefer that they get voice working without dropped calls (in LA at least) before increasing data speed?
