New York - Looking to expand the reach of its email and instant messaging services, Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) AOL has hired former Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) executive Brad Garlinghouse as its president of Internet and mobile communications.

In addition, Garlinghouse will head up AOL's Silicon Valley operations from its Mountain View, Calif. campus and serve as the West Coast lead for AOL Ventures, the company's venture capital arm.

Garlinghouse spent nearly six years at Yahoo, leading that company's communications and community product groups.

Most recently, he served as an in-house senior advisor at Silver Lake Partners.

AOL CEO Tim Armstrong called Garlinghouse an "all-star in the Internet industry," who will be "a major force for AOL in Silicon Valley, working to expand our presence there and in the tech community in general."
