TechCrunch Punk'd by Facebook with Fake News StoryAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on September 11, 2009 - 9:54am.
Palo Alto,
Calif. - Facebook had some fun
with technology news blog TechCrunch this week, planting the seeds for a fake
story about a new "Fax This Photo" feature on the Facebook account of
reporter Jason Kincaid. Some 20 minutes after noticing the actually-working feature
-- which Facebook had posted only to Kincaid's account -- and emailing a query
to Facebook, Kincaid posted a story entitled "Facebook Now Lets You Fax
Your Photos. I Have No Idea Why Anyone Would Want To Do This." Facebook's
Jaime Schopflin eventually revealed the prank to Kincaid. "They were
placing bets around the office on how long before we noticed it and posted. And
something else about teaching us to contact them before posting," Kincaid
wrote.
