U.K. Unlimited MP3 Download Service Datz Shuts DownAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on September 16, 2009 - 10:37am.
London - Datz, the provider
of an unlimited MP3 download service in the U.K., has shut down after failing
to generate enough revenue to pay music licensing fees, Billboard reported.
The service launched in October 2008 with licenses from labels including EMI, Warner Music, Beggars Group and The Orchard. Subscribers paid about $165 a year, and were verified via a unique USB key. Datz has now ceased trading and will soon go into liquidation, director Anna Cole-Morgan told Billboard. "The biggest problem was that we didn't get one of the other two majors [Universal or Sony Music] on board," Cole-Morgan told Billboard. "We needed an investor and in the current climate that was impossible to get."
