Reports: Variety, THR to Erect Web Content 'Paywalls'Authored by Mark Hefflinger on September 17, 2009 - 10:54am.
Los Angeles - Veteran Hollywood trade publications Variety and The Hollywood
Reporter (THR) are planning to place most of their online content behind a
subscription "paywall," according to reports from Deadline.com and
PaidContent.
Deadline.com reports that Variety.com will initiate a paywall for its online content in 2010, and additionally that THR will scrap its print edition entirely yet this year; PaidContent said its sources disputed this element of the report. Variety had a subscription paywall in place until 2006, when it made most of its online content available for free, while THR opened up its online content in 2007.
