New York - According to reports from multiple news outlets, Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), the nation's largest cable TV provider, is in talks to acquire or purchase a stake in content giant NBC Universal from General Electric (NYSE: GE).

The first reports on the talks were published on Wednesday evening, and stated that Comcast was looking to buy about 50% of NBCU.

More recent reports indicate that GE could spin off NBC Universal into a new company, which would then be merged with Comcast's content-related assets -- which include E!, Style Network, G4, Golf Channel, FEARnet, a number of regional sports networks, and its interactive division.

The reports state that no deal is finalized and could still fall through.

Comcast made a failed bid to acquire Disney for $54 billion back in 2004.
