Los Angeles - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has fired at least three of its top anti-piracy executives, while chairman and CEO Dan Glickman will step down in September 2010 when his contract expires, CNET News.com reported.

Those getting the axe three weeks ago included MPAA general counsel Greg Goeckner, and the studio lobbying group's director of worldwide antipiracy operations, and deputy director of Internet antipiracy.

An MPAA spokeswoman told CNET that senior executive vice president Daniel Mandil has been named general counsel and chief of "content protection," as the anti-piracy unit will now be called.

Both CNET and Politico cited unnamed sources who said that the studios have not been happy with the MPAA's antipiracy efforts, or with Glickman's record lobbying Congress on their behalf.
