New York Times to Cut 100 Newsroom JobsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on October 19, 2009 - 9:09am.
New York
- Hampered by the ongoing advertising slump, The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) will cut 100 newsroom
positions, or about 8% of its editorial staff, the paper reported on its
website.
The company will offer buyouts to both union and non-union employees -- but said that if enough do not apply for buyouts, it will have to resort to layoffs. The paper currently employs about 1,250 staff in its newsroom. "I won't pretend that these staff cuts will not add to the burdens of journalists whose responsibilities have grown faster than their compensation," Times executive editor Bill Keller wrote in a note to staff. "Like you, I yearn for the day when we can do our jobs without looking over our shoulders for economic thunderstorms."
